Shiny People
…an improvised comedy series surrounding the SHINY world of corporate “entertainment.”
In the spirit of 30 Rock, Extras and The Office, Shiny People takes a comic leap into a specific group’s workplace. In this case, what they do there just happens to be absurd.
Meet Ryan, Andy and Paige. They produce “exciting” corporate shows in hotels, where conference ballrooms become Broadway spectacles, and k-list celebrities sing songs about Sprite and dance about Dexatrim. They coach impotent executives to give their finest speeches, rally sales reps into an excited frenzy about new products and pluck drunken district managers from the Jacuzzi. And, because “every business needs a great show,” Ryan and Andy have assembled a corpo-tainment dream team. These eccentric men and women make the magic. They are all… Shiny People’s.
In every episode, naturally things will go wrong on and offstage, but the Shiny People’sinevitably manage to transport the conference attendees into a blissful euphoria. After all, it’s not often these men and women of corporate America get to steal away to exciting Orlando, Secaucus, Anaheim, or even Des Moines for a weekend of grown-up fun.
While this world proves to be a hysterical backdrop, the essence of Shiny People’s comedy is classic. As in the world of Seinfeld, Cheers, and even The Honeymooners, what makes this funny is the relationship between its hilarious series regulars.
Andy is really earnest in his love for this shit. Ryan hates it and would rather drink puke than do another “fun-filled event.” Paige thinks their both fucking idiots.
The difference is in the style by which it’s created. Shiny People’s is entirely IMPROVISED by some of the world’s most gifted improv comedic actors; they often know nothing other than who they are when the single, hand-held camera starts rolling. They’re given a plot point and a secret or two, and the surprises begin at “Action”.
In addition to its creator/performers, Brian d’Arcy James and Sandy Marshall, also helming this gutsy new endeavor is director and long-time producer Matt Bennett, as well as one of the geniuses behind 30 Rock, The Tracy Ullman Show and Cosby, the Shiny Executive Producer, Don Scardino.
Every week the Shiny People will struggle through victory, defeat and probable insanity while hyping up crowds about dripless faucets and acne cream. Audiences will laugh their asses off.
